Plan International grabs title sponsorship of 2016 Women First 5km
6 February 2016 - Great Ethiopian Run is celebrating this year it’s 13th edition of the annual Women First 5km, women only run which was started to mark international women’s day twelve years ago and highlight contribution of Ethiopian women in the society. Ethiopia is celebrating the International Women Day for the 40thtime this year, showcasing the country’s long term commitment at the highest level to advancing the women’s agenda.
A total of 10,000 girls and women are expected to register for the event. The event has become one of the biggest women only event in the country where girls and women from all walks of life come together to celebrate the day. Plan International Ethiopia has become the title sponsor of the 2016 Women First 5km. The partnership is a perfect fit as it focuses on girls and women issues. ‘Because I am a Girl’ is Plan International’s global initiative to end gender inequality, promote girls’ issue and lift millions of girls out of poverty. Plan International Ethiopia’s Country Director, Manoj Kumar says “plan international envisions a world where girls can learn, lead, decide and thrive.”
The WOMEN FIRST 5k race is used as a stepping stone for young, emerging female athletes. Tiki Gelana who won the race’s 5th edition in 2008, five months later won Olympic gold medal at Beijing Olympic. Aselefech Mergia who won the race twice in 2007 and 2009 became bronze medalist at the 2009 World Marathon Championship, and three times winner of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Senber Teferi who has won the race three times in 2012, 2013 and 2014 was a silver medallist at the 5,000m Beijing World championship in 2015. A total of 200 club and individual athletes are expected to take part on the event this year.
UN Ethiopia is also one of the partners to the Women First 5km and the First SDG Race in Jigjiga which will take place the coming Sunday 7th February 2016. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a new, universal set of goals, targets and indicators that UN member states will be expected to use to frame their agendas and political policies over the next 15 years. The SDGs follow and expand on the millennium development goals (MDGs), which were agreed by governments in 2001 and to achieve in 2015. Sustainable development is unthinkable without the participation of women and that why as we celebrate the International Women’s Day this year, the UN in Ethiopia calls on everyone to “UNite to Create the Future We Want”.
Enat Bank which was founded by 11 influential Ethiopian women and with a special focus on women is also another sponsor of the Women First 5km.  Two of Enat Bank branches will be used as registration centers for race. Registration fee is 120birr including VAT. Here are the three registration centers that will start registration next week on 8th February 2016:

The Icon Women competition which has gained popularity the last two years will be branded as DSTV Icon Women competition as a result of DSTV’s sponsorship of the event and is expected to attract prominent women in Ethiopia.  Our other sponsors includes Dasani which is the official water supplier, Irish Aid which was supporting the event for many years, Golden Tulip Hotel which is the official race hotel and our media partners Fana Broadcasting Corporate and Capital Newspaper.
